This book is for all those who find themselves at soccer games and not fully understanding what's going on. It clearly explains the "beautiful game" so that none of the excitement is missed. It spells out what each player at each position is supposed to do, describes the skills and talents needed to perform well, and lays out the basic offensive and defensive strategies teams employ to secure a win. Books currently available on soccer focus on how to play or how to coach the game. This is the only book written for those watching a game.

About the authors
Former sportswriter and columnist Ron Rhody, and Chris Rhody, a Division I player at Georgetown University and nationally licensed coach, combine their experience to provide a clear and understandable explanation of soccer for all. Nothing else like it is available.

SOCCER A Spectator Guide eBook Ron Rhody Chris Rhody

I have lived overseas (outside the U.S.) for years, but never really got interested in soccer -- excuse me, "association football" until the 2014 FIFA World Cup. I finally decided I'd like to understand what all the fuss was about, and this little book was just the thing. I have read it during this World Cup, and have enjoyed each game more than the previous one. I think I might just become a real soccer fan -- especially since I found out that my home town, Kansas City, has a Major League Soccer club, so now I have a team to support!

I'd recommend this book to anybody who, like me, never played soccer as a kid, but now as an adult has become interested enough to want to know what's going on with all those guys running around out there. :-)

SOCCER A Spectator Guide eBook Ron Rhody Chris Rhody Reviews

An excellent book for someone new to soccer. Very informative and clearly written..
I recently fell in love with Soccer, but admittedly did not understand everything that was going on. This book really explained what I was missing. It's straightforward, concise, and written with great love. I would and have recommended it to anyone wanting to learn the sport.
The book does a really good job of introducing the game of soccer to a new fan. The concepts of the game and how it is played are well-described and easy to follow. I read the book and then watched a soccer game on television and found that the book improved my understanding of the game and the tactics.
Hey, if you know nothing about soccer this is a great beginner's guide. It is as simple a book as you can get. Much of it can probably be learned through alternative free sources as well but I would buy it again as I appreciate the author's effort(s) at making every aspect of soccer accessible to the inexperienced reader.
Written for those who don't know anything about soccer but, for one reason or another (children or grand-children who play, for example), ended up being soccer spectators, or for those who want to understand what all the fuss is about during World Cups. . Unpretentious and written in a flowing and good-humoured style, the book is successful in showing why this sport is loved by billions of people all over the world and how you can learn to love it too. Each chapter ends with a helpful list of "things to watch for" as a beginner spectator. Makes you want to keep learning more and more about the Beautiful Game!
This is a great, great book to read if you want to know more and appreciate soccer. Clear, simple, but with enough detail to make the game really interesting. I'm so glad I bought it. Even after watching soccer for quite a few years, this increased my appreciation of the game tremendously.
I got hooked on soccer thru the World Cup. Unfortunately, I didn't have a clue about what was going on.

All of the books I could find were those that tought coaching or playing. Then I tripped over this one that explained, starting from watching games at the fourth grade level, how to watch. It worked for me.

Now I am watching the final games with some degree of knowledge. The book is on my level. Which is very low.
